A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Webb served as a Marine platoon commander during the Vietnam War. He earned the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts for his bravery in combat. He briefly ran for the Democratic nomination but withdrew in October 2015, stating he felt “not comfortable” with the party’s leadership positions.
